Factory grab handles are fine until you're on a rough track and your passenger is trying to hang on to a slippery piece of plastic that folds away from their hand. Paracord grab handles hang down where you can get a proper fist around them, and they don't rattle.
They're also about the easiest thing you'll ever bolt to a 4x4. This guide covers what to check before ordering and how to fit them.
What you're buying
Renegade Grips are woven from paracord in a double-layer cobra knot, with a mounting loop at each end. The standard length is 25cm. Each one is made to order and normally ships within 24 to 72 hours, and if you need a different length you can message us before ordering to get a custom one made.
The grip itself doesn't come with hardware, so add a paracord grip install kit for each grip. One kit does one grip. The kit bolts are M6 thread and 20mm long, with washers 19mm wide to spread the load across the mounting loop.
Check these before you order
Where they will mount
Most people fit them where the factory roof grab handles sit, above the doors, because the threaded mounting points are already there. Pop the caps or covers off your existing handle and have a look at what's holding it on.
If your vehicle has a factory handle on the A-pillar, a grip can go there in the same way.

Thread size
The install kit uses M6 bolts. Take one of your factory bolts out and compare it, or try it in a known M6 nut. If your vehicle uses a different thread, get in touch before you order and we'll help you work out what you need.
Curtain airbags
If your 4x4 has curtain airbags along the roof line, read the owner's manual before fitting anything near them, and never mount a grip where it would sit across an airbag's path.
How many you need
Count the positions you want to cover. A dual cab typically takes four, one above each door. Remember that some vehicles have no factory handle on the driver's side, so check that there are mounting holes there before you order a fourth.
Fitting them
You'll need the hex key or socket to suit the bolts, a trim tool or flat screwdriver, and about ten minutes a side.
- Remove the factory handle. Prise off the plastic caps at each end to reach the bolts or clips, then undo them and lift the handle away.
- Check the threads are clean. Run a bolt in a few turns by hand to make sure it starts easily.
- Hold the grip up to the two mounting points. It should hang with a slight curve so you can get your hand through it.
- Put a bolt through a washer, then through the mounting loop, and start it by hand. Do the same at the other end before tightening either one.
- Tighten both bolts firmly. You're threading into a captive nut in thin sheet metal, so stop when it is snug and don't lean on it.
- Give the grip a solid pull in the direction a passenger would. Nothing should shift.
Keep the factory handles and bolts in a bag in the shed. If you sell the vehicle, they go back on in minutes.
Choosing a colour
There are more than twenty colourways, which is where people get stuck. A few pointers:
- Black and grey mixes such as Maverick and Black Beauty suit any interior and hide dirt well. Renegade Grips says Black Beauty with the black mounting kit was its most popular combination in 2024. That's the setup in the photo at the top of this guide.
- If your build has an accent colour on the recovery points, wheels or stickers, matching it works better than introducing a new one. Red Back and Blue Storm are the usual picks for that.
- Light colours look great new and show muddy hands quickly. They wash, but you'll be washing them.
If you don't like the look of silver bolt heads against the cord, coloured dress bolts come in packs of two. They're the same M6 by 20mm size and use the washers from the install kit.
Looking after them
Paracord is nylon, so it handles sweat, sunscreen and mud without much complaint. When the grips get grubby, unbolt them, hand wash in warm soapy water and let them dry in the shade before refitting. Check the bolts are still tight every few months, the same as you would anything else bolted to a vehicle that spends time on corrugations.
Common questions
Do paracord grab handles fit any vehicle?
They fit most vehicles with two threaded mounting points a suitable distance apart. The standard grip is 25cm, and custom lengths are available if your mounting points are closer together or further apart.
Do I need an install kit?
Yes, unless you already have suitable M6 bolts and wide washers. Factory handle bolts are often too short or have the wrong head for the loop, so one kit per grip is the safe way to order.
Can I get a custom length or colour?
Custom lengths are available. Message us before you order so the grip is made to the right size.
Are they strong enough to pull yourself up with?
They are made to be held and pulled on like a factory grab handle. How much load they take depends on your vehicle's mounting points as much as the grip, so treat them as you would the handle they replaced.
