HPD intercooler fitted to a Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series V8

The 79 and the 200 share a badge and a V8 diesel and not much else. One is a leaf-sprung work truck with a live front axle. The other is a coil-sprung wagon with independent front suspension and an automatic. They need different things, so we've split this guide in two after the parts that apply to both.

For both: recovery points and a catch can

Start with somewhere safe to attach a strap. A loaded Landcruiser is heavy, and that puts big loads through whatever you recover from. ATI makes rated recovery points for the V8 70 Series and the 200 Series. Add a recovery hitch for the rear.

Next is a catch can. The 1VD V8 diesel in both vehicles recirculates oil vapour and exhaust gas into the intake, and the two combine into a build-up over time. HPD makes cans for the 70 Series V8 and the 200 Series V8. We explain how they work in do you need a catch can?

79 Series

Rear suspension help

Most 79s carry a tray, a canopy or a camper, and many tow as well. If your load changes from week to week, an airbag load assist kit lets you add support when the tray is full and release it when it's empty. Airbags help the springs carry a load. They don't raise the legal payload, and a 79 that is always heavy is better served by springs matched to that weight.

Brake lines

A lift on a 79 stretches the factory brake hoses at full droop. ATI's extended braided lines come as full kits for the different brake systems the 79 has had over the years, so match the kit to yours: non-ABS, ABS or ABS with VSC.

Intercooler

If the engine is tuned or pulls a heavy van, a larger intercooler keeps intake temperatures down. HPD has a top mount kit for the 70 Series V8. On a stock engine this can wait.

Pedal response

The V8 79 has a slow accelerator pedal from the factory, and a manual gearbox makes it more obvious. An Ultimate9 EVC throttle controller changes how the pedal responds. It adds no power. See are throttle controllers worth it?

200 Series

A transmission cooler if you tow

The 200 is one of the most common tow vehicles on Australian roads, and its automatic runs warm with a big van behind it, more so in sand or on long climbs. The HPD transcooler kit for the 200 Series is made for the vehicle and fits without cutting. Our guide on whether you need a transmission cooler covers how to tell.

Front end parts after a lift

The 200 has independent front suspension, so a lift changes the alignment and the CV angles. Depending on what the wheel aligner finds, you may need adjustable upper control arms to get caster back and a 25mm diff drop kit to ease the CVs.

Rear axle centring

The 200's rear axle is located by a panhard rod, so lifting the vehicle pulls the axle to one side. An adjustable panhard rod brings it back to centre. It also fits the 300 Series. We go through all the lift-related parts in what you actually need after a 2-inch lift.

Intercooler

For a tuned or hard-working 200, HPD's 200 Series V8 intercooler replaces the factory unit with a larger core.

Wheels

The 200 uses a 5x150 stud pattern, which narrows your wheel choices. The ATI AT-01 in 5x150 is made for it. Check offset and brake clearance before ordering, and read our beadlock wheel guide for the ring options.

Small things for both

Common questions

What is the first mod to do on a 79 Series?

Rated recovery points and a catch can. After that it depends on your load: suspension matched to the weight you carry is where most 79 owners spend next.

Does a 200 Series need a transmission cooler?

If it tows heavy or drives in sand often, it's worth having. For a 200 that mostly does highway and town driving unladen, the factory cooling copes.

Do these parts fit the 300 Series?

A few do, such as the adjustable panhard rod. Most 300 Series parts are different, so check the years in each product title. Everything is in our Landcruiser parts collection.

Do the 76 and 78 use the same parts as the 79?

Many of the parts listed here are sold as 76/78/79 fitments. The product titles show which models each one covers.
